Our Working with Gold Improver course is designed to further develop skills garnered on previous Improver jewellery courses, (sorry, not for beginners wanting to try their first Improver course). This is a great option if you have attended jewellery making classes elsewhere and are confident in the workshop environment. Please contact us if you require a skill level assessment.
On this course you will learn how to work with gold and use gold as accents in silver jewellery. Students are introduced to the various gold alloys and the different properties of each carat. The course is comprised of 4 parts;
Students begin by making their own raw material for turning into a stack ring through melting, milling and drawing. This is an excellent opportunity to learn how to melt down old gold jewellery as well as using new gold grain. If you have old gold jewellery you would be interested in using to melt down for this project please feel free to bring it along, otherwise we'll use gold grain.
Using the raw material created in part 1 we will be making a stack ring customised to suit your personal taste. The project is designed to teach students how to solder and achieve various finishes in gold.
Part 3 of the course teaches how to use gold accents on silver jewellery through Keum-boo and plating techniques.
To complete the course students are encouraged to design their own piece to explore these new techniques with full guidance from the course tutor.
Keum-boo is the process of fusing high carat gold foil to a fine silver surface.
Gold plating is the process of depositing a thin layer of gold onto the surface of another metal using an electric current.
Currently 9ct gold grain is £14 per gram excluding VAT.
2 grams of 9ct gold would make an average size 2mm round section ring. We will discuss various approaches to making your gold go further during this course.
Sundries such as solder and saw blades are included in the course fees. Metals, findings and a variety of stones are available for purchase at the school or feel free to bring your own to work with. However, gold can be ordered in advance as required per student and paid for on receipt. We do not hold gold on site.
Suitable for Intermediate level students.
