Course Overview

Advanced Stone Setting Course

Master basket, claw, and channel stone setting through three projects, gaining professional precision and finishing skills.

Refine your precision and elevate your craftsmanship with our Advanced Stone Setting Course. Designed for jewellers who already have a solid foundation in basic setting techniques (such as tube setting or rub-over setting), this term-time course explores the techniques behind basket, claw, and channel settings.

Under expert guidance, you’ll develop the confidence to design, create and finish complex settings with professional polish and precision.

Course Schedule

This advanced stone setting course is built around a series of focused projects, each designed to deepen your understanding of precision setting techniques.

  • Project 1 – The Basket Setting
Begin by designing and constructing a traditional basket setting.
You’ll learn to measure, cut, and solder components accurately, forming a balanced framework that lets light flow through the stone.
  • Project 2The Claw Setting
Move on to claw (prong) settings, starting with a round stone before exploring more complex cuts.
You’ll form, align and secure claws for both symmetry and strength, achieving a clean, elegant finish.
  • Project 3 – The Channel Setting
Learn the principles of channel setting – the clean, modern way to secure rows of stones.
You’ll mark, cut and seat multiple stones, refining your accuracy and control.

Workshop Safety

As a student you are responsible for your own safety in the workshop. The most important things to remember are;

  • Covered footwear is required and absolutely no high heels.
  • Tie back long hair when using motorised equipment.
  • Please respect others and don’t interrupt students who are soldering, using the drill or any other equipment that could create a safety concern if the operator is distracted.
  • Remember to take all your belongings with you when you leave.
  • Please leave all unnecessary personal items at home.

You will need to bring

  • Your own apron, to protect your clothes.
  • Packed lunches are recommended if your class runs for a full day.
